REDUCING, REUSING & RECYCLING

Metropolis understands the importance of a healthy environment; we have taken action to reduce our ecological footprint and we aim to continually improve our practices Our efforts and
achievements include:

  • In 2016, upgrading the LED lights in the parkade below Atrium Court – energy saved: 2,692,123 kWh per year.
  • In 2018, updating the LED lights in the parking lot off Central Boulevard, near Walmart, energy saved: 1,698,733 kWh per year.
  • In 2022, upgrading the LED lights in the Grand Court and Atrium Court – by eliminated 26 light fixtures, energy saved: 123,786 kWh per year.
  • In 2024, upgraded the exterior LED lighting, energy saved: 883,699 kWh per year. Boiler replacement with a new high efficiency condensing boiler reducing gas consumption.

  • Reducing waste by extending the life of technology through donations of computers, printers, and monitors to organizations and individuals in need, ensuring these items are reused instead of ending up in landfills.

  • Since 2015, four Food Court organic recycling stations have enabled customers to drop off trays for sorting into organics, plastics, paper, bottles/cans, and waste, diverting more materials from landfill to composting.
  • Since 2018, in collaboration with EZEE Hoarding, we have reduced over 158,313 pounds of onetime use materials from entering landfills by implementing reusable, sustainable and
    environmentally friendly hoarding systems to conceal a vacant unit.
  • In 2024, we organized a clothing drive that collected 1657 pounds of clothing, successfully diverting this waste from landfills and supporting sustainable reuse in our community.

  • MET serves as a recycling hub, offering tenants and retailers convenient systems to recycle paper, cardboard, tin, glass, and electronics—efforts that have saved hundreds of trees.
  • Since 2018, the ChopValue program have recycled 3,458,932 of chopsticks offsetting a total of 168,395 kg CO2 emissions. You can make a difference by properly disposing recyclables.

Eco-Centre
Burnaby’s Eco-Centre is a public facility where residents can recycle large volumes of materials, compost, and toxic materials that may be harmful to the environment.
